Synopsis:

Al-Fao city, or Zat Kahl as known in the past, is one of the best examples of the way Arabs built their cities before Islam. It was built in 2400 B.C. It was used as a path for the caravans traveling through the center of the Arab Peninsula, which explains why it had no walls. Many carvings for idols were found in the temple adjacent to the populated city. However, the most noticeable ancient remains in al-Fao are the high gravestones which still stand with a height of three meters and a width of two to three meters.
Like most ancient civilizations, people of Al-Fao city gave special attention to building tombs; they spread out on the right side of the city market, where we can also see the old shops and a big well in the middle of the market.
Many peoples lived in that city, but the Kanadat Kingdom was the most famous kingdom that was established in it. It was also home to the Pre-Islamic poet Imru'u al Quais.
